How to Use

For the best results, use after the Hian Skin Facial Cleansing Serum and Hian Skin Renewal Serum, massage a pea-sized amount onto clean, dry skin, starting at chin and continuing in upward motion. Smooth from centre to edges of face. At forehead, continue to massage in upward motion to strengthen facial muscles.

What factors can affect the health of your skin?

There are numerous factors that weigh on the integrity and overall health of the skin. First of all, as we age our bodies produce less and less collagen (more on that in a minute). In addition, environmental factors such as air pollution, intense sunlight and whether a person smokes or not also influence the health and appearance of our skin.

Another factor is dehydration. For whatever reason many people simply do not drink enough water and over time this hydration shortfall has a pronounced negative effect on the health of the skin.

Why do I need products that contain collagen?

As we age the amount of collagen produced by the body steadily decreases. After about the age of 20 collagen production in the average person decreases by 1 to 1.5% every year. So by the time a person is 40, they are producing anywhere from 20 to 30% less collagen than they were when they were 20. Because collagen is such an important protein that production shortfall produces a variety of negative effects, including sallow, unhealthy looking skin.

What are collagen peptides?

Scientists agree that collagen compounds in their whole form are too big to be absorbed by the skin. Are there different types of collagen?

There are actually 28 different types of collagen in nature but only a few that occur naturally in humans. The collagen types found in humans include:

Type I collagen

Type 1 accounts for about 90% of all the collagen found in the human body. It is typically found just below the surface of the skin and distributed throughout the body. Most collagen supplements use Type I collagen because of its importance and the array of potential benefits it can produce.

Type III collagen

This is the second most common form of collagen found in the human body. It is different from other types of collagen in that it is composed of a single alpha chain whereas other types of collagen have multiple chains. Type III collagen plays an essential role in wound healing and tissue formation.

Type V collagen

Type V collagen is found mostly in the eye where it allows light to pass through the cornea. Type V works in concert with Type I and Type III collagen to create the structural basis of bodily tissues and also helps build strong bones and muscles.

Does exposure to sunlight affect collagen production?

It does. Ultraviolet light penetrates the skin and promotes free radicals which in turn produce oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can and does damage collagen and DNA and contributes to the ageing process. Research also indicates it contributes to a variety of health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and certain types of cancer.
