The start of a New Year is the perfect time to consider any new habits you’d like to make a part of your routine and drop any that aren’t doing you any favours! But sticking to New Year’s resolutions can be easier said than done, with an estimated 80% of New Year’s resolutions failing in 2022.*
So, what can we do to make sure we stick to our January plans and give ourselves the best chance of forming and keeping our new habits in 2023?
Keep it simple
The more complicated we make plans to change our habits, start new hobbies or give up something that’s unhealthy, the more likely we are to struggle to follow them and quickly give up. Keep your plans simple, straight forward, and easy to follow.
Don’t do too much!
Changing lots of things all at once can be hard to maintain and keep up with alongside our busy lives. Choose just one or two things at a time and take small steps that are more likely to be maintained for longer.
Be realistic
You may have ambitions of running a marathon in 2023, dropping 3 dress sizes or climbing Mount Everest but try to set realistic goals that fit with your lifestyle, work life and budget.
Write a detailed plan
Writing down your intensions is a great way to help you stick to your plans and a reminder of what and why your doing this. There may be days when you don’t feel like heading out for some fresh air or hitting the gym. But having a written plan will make it easier to stick to and you can even add some of the reasons why you’re doing this – improved health, better finances, or personal wellbeing.
Journal your progress
Some days you may feel like you’re not achieving your goals as quickly as you would like, but being able to look back to a few weeks or a month ago and see just how far you’ve come, is a great reminder of the improvements you’re making and really inspiring to continue on your path.
Give yourself a break
If you fall behind on your plans, don’t beat yourself up about it. Take a few days to consider why you’re doing this in the first place. Revisit your plans and journal entries to reaffirm your decisions and start again.
Go for it!
No matter how ambitious your New Year’s resolutions for 2023 are, we wish you all the best in sticking to your plans and smashing your goals this year.
